Colt Starting Program
How the program works
The Summer Colt Starting Program will begin taking applications and interviews from local "at-risk" teens in April of 2019 from youth ages 15-18 years old. This program is no cost to the youth enrolled, and will be accepting up to 6 participants each year. Wild Souls Ranch will have a total of 3 gentled colts for this program.
The Wild Souls Ranch in-house horse trainers and youth will put a 90 day start on the colts (the first 30 days by the trainers in May to get them gentled before the youth work with them), and then sell them at a local horse sale that will be put on by Wild Souls Ranch in the fall of 2019. (All proceeds from this sale go directly back into this program.)
Tessa Lawson, the Head Trainer at Wild Souls Ranch, has 11 years of experience starting colts, and has a local professional reputation for producing some of the best started ranch and reined cow-horse colts in the County.
The youth will attend Wild Souls Ranch in the summer mornings from 9 AM- 12 PM and will be required to attend 3-5 each week from June-August (3 months).
Participants will get the opportunity to learn and experience the colt starting process from start to finish alongside Wild Souls Ranch Head Trainer, Tessa Lawson, and Assistant Trainer, Lindsay Luster.
The program will also include interviewing skill building with Founder & Executive Director, Savanah McCarty, processing of their learning and emotional experience with in-house social workers, and how they will take their new found skills into real life jobs, school, and home life.
